I suspect TISWAS started an entire generation on the road to WAM. Looking back now (and having seen various excerpts and the commercial tapes), it wasn't actually that good from a WAM POV when compared to some of what came after, but that doesn't matter simply because it was the very first time most of us had ever seen anything like it.
In my own case, the "magic moment" happened when I was about 12 or 13, in what must have been the second last year of the show (the last year with Sally James in). Right at the end they'd had some kind of quiz type thing with someone sitting under a big metal tub of watery slosh, and Sally James, dressed in black jeans and a long-sleeve black shirt, sitting next to him. At the appropriate time she legged it and the contestant got the dousing.
But then something else happened, and Sally got plastered with what must have been about two dozen shaving-cream pies all over her head and shirt, and then a huge tub of water was poured on her from above. The camera stayed in long-shot, so we got to see the tide of water and white slosh flowing down and soaking her outfit, all the way to the floor.
All through the 80s and into the 90s other shows had more mess, better planned mess, better photographed mess - but nothing will ever compare to the memory of that very first realisation that I *liked* seeing fully dressed, casually dressed girls getting deliberately gunged.
It has indeed got a lot to answer for! |

I used to watch it too, but I only discovered it shortly before it finished.
I guess that forced me into soaking and gunging girls myself instead on a regular basis, a truly terrible ordeal. That program has a lot to answer for.

By Wet Brian - bdann0875@rootesgroup.fslife.co.uk Fri 05/12/03 09:29:09 GMT Website: www.apex-wetlook.co.uk I used to watch TISWAS (This Is Saturday Wear A Smile,I think TISWAS stood for??) regularly, unless Multicoloured Swap Shop had a group on I liked. But one week,my favourite female group at the time was The Nolans,so I was in heaven(well as much as a 9 year old could be!)when they got covered by the phantom flan flinger! Brian |
In reply to Message (7241) Period Dress wetlook & Phanton Flan Flinger
By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 05/12/03 08:46:43 GMT Website: http://www.wamtec.com/PHUSBAND.JPG Folks on the wamtec forum requested these 2 video clips to be uploaded.
1) The period dress scene from THE PERFECT HUSBAND...I know this is one of Roger's favorites, cos the black tights worn with the dress. This is the kind of wet scene I love the most...something totally unpredictable that happens in the middle of an offbeat movie..
..here are some quickie vidcaps
http://www.wamtec.com/PHUSBAND.JPG
The full 4 minute videoclip at 700kpbs can be downloaded from the members area.
2) I receive a lot of requests for the rare TISWAS scenes Roger and I taped persoally off the tv in the 1970's (when few people but us had a vcr in those days)...especially of the young Sheena Easton getting attacked with pies and gunge by the Phantom Flan Flinger....so I have uploaded that video clip too. Although this may seem a bit off topic, I know Leonmoomin will want to study this clip for his own reasons....Chris Tarrant and Bob Monkhouse both seemed to be the fastest mouths in the west in those days.
